Rescue Story
Boek, Barteld & Geesje (Kootstra)
When the war broke out, Barteld and Geesje Boek were living in the small village of Oosterwolde in Friesland. In the second half of 1943, Alida and Jacob de Wilde-Coopman were sheltered by the young married couple, staying with them for ten months. During this time, Alida gave birth to a daughter, Frederika, on January 5, 1944, and both the pregnancy and the delivery passed without undue hardship. The Boeks received the baby into their home as if she were their own child. Throughout their time in hiding with the Boeks, the de Wildes paid 15 guilders a week towards their upkeep. After ten months, Alida and Jacob were forced to leave the Boeks for reasons of safety and the husband and wife went into hiding at separate addresses. Nevertheless, they maintained a warm relationship with the Boeks even after the war.
On June 26, 1980, Yad Vashem recognized Barteld Boek and his wife, Geesje Boek-Kootstra, as Righteous Among the Nations.
