Rescue Story
Blok, Gerrit Hendrik & Anna Philippina (Knierim)
When the war broke out, Gerrit Blok, the headmaster of a U.L.O school (a school for advanced elementary education), and his wife, Anna, were living in Heerlen, Limburg. They were Calvinists and had no children. During the war, they hid many Jewish people in their home. From September 1942 until September 1944, Rosalie Wijnbergen found refuge with them. Esther and Jacob Blez arrived at the Bloks’ home after their hideout in Hendrika Huysmans-Wooning’s* home was betrayed by one of her family members. The Blezes stayed with Gerrit and Anna from October 1942 until December 1942. In 1943, Anne Marie van Verschuer*, a member of the NV, took Gustaaf Braun to the Bloks’ home after his wife had died at the previous hideaway. He was hidden there for six months. During the course of the war, Herman Roe also hid there for 18 months and the elderly couple Gerschon and Mirla Silber stayed with the Bloks for seven months. As well as all these charges, the Bloks sheltered many other adults and children, most of whom were brought there by members of the NV for only a few days or weeks.
On October 20, 1978, Yad Vashem recognized Gerrit Hendrik Blok and his wife, Anna Philippina Blok-Knierim, as Righteous Among the Nations.
