Rescue Story
Berga, Klaas
In March 1943, the constabulary of Grootegast, Groningen, and the surrounding villages refused to obey an order to arrest seven Jews. One of those who refused was Klaas Berga of Opende, Friesland, who was punished for his noncompliance by deportation to the Vught concentration camp, where he spent a year before being transferred to Germany for hard labor. Shortly after Germany surrendered, he was repatriated. Police sergeant Dirk Boonstra*, who had initiated the collective refusal, perished in Dachau.
On November 14, 1988, Yad Vashem recognized Klaas Berga as Righteous Among the Nations.
