In September 1942, after the intensification of razzias, a friend of Celine's told her about someone who would help if she chose to go into hiding. On September 17, Celine visited the contact, Mr. Reiff, and he accompanied her to his home in Dieren, Gelderland, traveling by train. The following day, he took her to an empty house in nearby Doetinchem and a week later he brought her to Jan and Jannetje Bloemendaal's farm in Ruurlo, Gelderland. The Bloemendaals lived on an isolated chicken farm, their relatives being their only distant neighbors. Celine was received warmly into their home and Jan and Jannetje ensured that all her needs were met--- including the Jewish dietary laws. Jan and Jannetje acted simply out of a desire to help people in severe peril. Apart from Derk and Grada Bloemendaal*, who were themselves hiding Jews, no one knew about Celine's presence. While in hiding, Celine helped out with household chores and paid 100 guilders a month to cover her food. She remained with the Bloemendaals until June 1945 and afterwards stayed in close touch with them. On February, 23, 1984, Yad Vashem recognized Evert Jan Bloemendaal and his wife, Jannetje Bloemendaal-Bruijnes, as Righteous Among the Nations.
