In September 1944, Josephine was forced to leave her hiding place with Reverend Bastiaan Ader*, who had been suspected by the Germans for some time of being involved in the Resistance movement. Eventually he was arrested and executed. Uncle Fritz, a member of the local underground, took Josephine to the Bindelses' house in Heerlen, Limburg, where she stayed until well after the liberation of Heerlen on September 17, 1944. Hendrik and Maria could not keep Josephines presence a secret because they were forced to share their air-raid shelter with neighbors. Therefore, rather than risking raising the suspicion that they were hiding a Jew, they introduced her as a refugee from Rotterdam whom they had hired as a maid. The story was believed because the Bindelses had so many children and both Hendrik and Maria worked at a local grocery store. Although Josephine only stayed with the family a short time, she discovered that they had hidden another woman whom they called Marianne. Her real name was Margaretha Haringman-Waas and she had lost her husband during a razzia in Amsterdam. She had found hideouts for her two young children, Salomon and Eva, who survived the war with Johannes and Janke de Vries*, and then came to stay with the Bindels family. On September 8, 1986, Yad Vashem recognized Hendrik Jozef Bindels and his wife, Maria Jozefina Hubertina Bindels-Jongen, as Righteous Among the Nations. |
