Rescue Story
Berverling, Jacob Gijsbert & Wilhelmina (Huyer) Jacob and Wilhelmina Berverling lived in the village of De Steeg, Gelderland, and ran two hotels in a neighboring village. In January 1944, despite the risks of hiding a Jew, they allowed 22-year-old Jo Gustaaf Levie to stay in one of their hotels. They took good care of him, bringing him food and never requesting payment. Jo had been hiding with his mother, Rosa, with the Witke* sisters in Dieren, Gelderland, until the Germans raided the house and arrested her. Jo managed to escape and went to the Berverlings, who were friends of his parents, for help. He stayed with them until the liberation in spring 1945. On February 15, 1979, Yad Vashem recognized Jacob Gijsbert Berverling and his wife, Wilhelmina Berverling-Huyer, as Righteous Among the Nations.
