They were specialists and thus hoped to prove their indispensability in Amsterdam, while their parents tried to stay out of German hands by producing medical certificates from cooperative doctors. However, in December 1942, the Nopol family was forced to go into hiding. The two daughters found a hideout in Amsterdam, but the parents were forced to move between various places. Finally they were sent to Arnoldus (Noud) and Adriana (Jeanne) van Berkom in Tilburg, North Brabant. The Nopols hid there from February 23, 1943, until the liberation of Tilburg on October 27, 1944. Jeanne and Noud, who had a young daughter, warmly welcomed the Nopols into their home. The two couples ate all their meals together. The van Berkoms took care of food coupons and whatever else was needed was purchased. The Nopols covered all household expenses, plus rent, but the van Berkoms never took anything extra for themselves. When Noud and Jeanne learned more about the Germans brutal treatment of the Jews in Amsterdam, they invited Catharina and Sophie, as well as Sophies fiancé, Leo Benninga, to move into their home. However, before they could accept the hospitality, they were arrested. Only six people knew that Noud and Jeanne were hiding Jews---Nouds closest relatives and their neighbor, Toos Govers, who was also hiding Jews in her home, including Mr. and Mrs. Driel. On April 18, 1982, Yad Vashem recognized Arnoldus Jacobus Joannes van Berkom and his wife, Adriana Maria Josephina van Berkom-Mommers, as Righteous Among the Nations. |
