Rescue Story
Berg van den, Theodorus Hendricus & Antje Geertruida Petronella (de Groot)
In May 1943, Theodorus (Theo) and Antje van den Berg, a couple living in Alkmaar, North Holland, received word from Antje’s younger sister, Margaretha Brinkman-De Groot*, that the elder of the two Jewish children who were hiding out with Margaretha and her husband in their Amsterdam apartment was becoming too talkative. Theo and Antje decided to take the little boy in and so five-year-old Jacques (Sieg) Koekoek came to their home where he stayed for the next two years, until the end of the war. Theo and Antje looked after him as if he were their own child and made sure he kept up his schooling, telling neighbors that Jacques was their nephew from Amsterdam. In November of that year they opened their home to additional Jewish fugitives, Meier and Rosa Mannheim-Prins and their 19-year-old son Salli. Meier later contracted tuberculosis and died and Rosa and Salli stayed with Theo and Antje until the liberation. The German police or soldiers would search the van den Bergs’ house from time to time but the four Jews were always able to crawl into a dark space under the roof and were never found. Theo and Antje did most of the work to provide for their guests, only receiving food from the local Resistance during the hunger winter. After the war, Jacques Koekoek was placed in one of the children’s homes run by Le’Ezrath HaJeled but remained in touch with his foster parents.
On March 15 1990, Yad Vashem recognized Theodorus Hendricus van den Berg and his wife, Antje Geertruida Petronella van den Berg-De Groot, as Righteous Among the Nations.
