Her husband, Chaim Natkiel, an active member of the Resistance, was advised by friends to hide, and decided to try to join the Dutch army in England. Before he left he asked two good friends to take in his wife and daughter. After the baby was placed with a couple, Alida went into hiding herself. She was forced to leave her hiding places for various reasons. In the meantime, Alidas husband, who had been caught and put in prison, was released and resumed his underground activities in Friesland. Through his contact, K. Postma*, he found a place for his wife to hide in May 1944. A Resistance worker took her on his bicycle to the Beimers family and she stayed with Rense and Froukje until the end of the war. They were staunch Protestants with ten children aged from three to over 20, all living on a small farm in St. Anna Parochie, Friesland, where they kept a few cows. They welcomed Alida into their family, and passed her off as a refugee escaping the dire food situation in the west of the country. Since Alida had a fair complexion, she was occasionally permitted to go out and work in the fields, as well as in the house. The family did everything to make her feel comfortable and happy, for no financial remuneration. On October 22, 1987, Yad Vashem recognized Rense Beimers and his wife, Froukje Beimers-Bij de Ley, as Righteous Among the Nations. |
