The family saved the life of Avraham Perlmutter, a 16-year-old Jewish boy who had been born in Austria and had already been through a great deal by the time he arrived in Grubbenvorst. He had been seized during a razzia in Amsterdam and taken to the Hollandsche Schouwburg prior to deportation, but managed to escape and hide. Through his sister Dorothea, who was already in hiding, he made contact with the Westerweel* group and, in late 1942, after hiding at a long series of temporary addresses, he went into hiding with the Beijers family through the intervention of the parish priest Henricus Vullinghs*. Avraham stayed with Peter and Gertrude until the liberation and they treated him as one of the family. They built a hiding place for him under the floor of their bedroom and this demonstrated its usefulness when the house was raided one night. Despite being threatened, all five family members denied that they were hiding a Jew and Avraham was not found. On November 14, 1994, Yad Vashem recognized Peter Beijers and his wife, Gertrude Beijers, as Righteous Among the Nations.
