When the situation deteriorated, they turned to Marcelis Beerling, a local municipal worker, who found them safe temporary accommodations with Hendrik and Maretje Kamminga. In addition to hiding Jews, Hendrik Kamminga was also a Resistance worker and forged an identity card for Isaak Streim. Beerling also arranged for Saras daughter to live with Dirk and Neeltje Bakker*. Over and above this risky covert activity, he arranged ration cards for infant care for the Bakkers so that they could comfortably keep the child safe and healthy. In all this work, Marcelis Beerling and the Kammingas never asked for any monetary reward whatsoever. Meanwhile, Sara had moved around between several families in Overijssel before eventually finding refuge with Dirk and Sibbelina Reeder* in Drachten (Friesland). By this time, Isaak was also hidden in Drachten, at the home of Jochem and Trijntje Tiekstra*. In 1944, Sara irresponsibly traveled to Oostzaan to visit her child. Oostzaan was a small village and her uncalculated move could have compromised both her and her babys safety if she had been recognized as the mother. Despite a neighbors actually remarking on the visual similarity between the mother and daughter, the Kamminga and Beerling families both agreed to accommodate Sara for the week of her stay regardless of the danger it posed to them. On May 24, 1979, Yad Vashem recognized Marcelis Charles Beerling and Hendrik Kamminga and his wife, Maretje Kamminga-Spaans, as Righteous Among the Nations. |
