Mr. and Mrs. Levie and their 14-year-old daughter Rosa, had been hiding in a vegetable store in the summer of 1942, but had to leave. Henk took the Levie couple to the house of his in-laws and brought Rosa to his own home. After a few weeks the Levies joined their daughter at the van Beeks. Rosa lived with the van Beeks downstairs while her parents were given a room upstairs. Mrs. Levie made toys from cloth, which Henk van Beek then sold. Henk also received Fl. 80 from the Resistance, of which he gave Fl. 60 to the Levies and kept Fl. 20 for the care of Rosa. The presence of the Jewish fugitives remained a well-guarded secret for a long time, but when rumors began to spread around the neighborhood, new hiding places were found for them. Rosa was taken by a friend, who was disguised in an SS uniform, to a new hiding place in Valkenburg. In January 1944, another Jew, Isadoor Eyl, found shelter at the van Beek home for a while. After the war the van Beeks and the Levies remained good friends until the latterÂ’s immigration to Canada. On January 21,1999, Yad Vashem recognized Hendrikus J. van Beek and his wife, Wilhelmina van Beek-Ruaris, as Righteous Among the Nations. |
