Rescue Story
Banga, Foppe & Dirkje (Faber)
On the night of October 5, 1942, Jan de Jong* and Joop Overdiep* escorted Johanna Tof and her young son Moritz from their home in Heerenveen, Friesland, to nearby Oranjewoud, where Dr. Harm Hofkamp* was waiting for them in his car. A permanent hiding place had not yet been found for the mother and child and they were going to stay with Sijtske van der Spoel* until a long-term hideout was located. Johanna’s husband, Bram, was already hiding in van der Spoel’s home. It proved to be impossible to find another place of refuge for Johanna and so the van der Spoels generously allowed her to remain with them, but Moritz had to be relocated. While Bram and Johanna were led to believe that their son was being taken to a good hiding place, he was actually moved to a poorhouse in Heerenveen. When Mozes Troostwijk, the secretary of the Jewish Council in Leeuwarden, heard about this, he and his mother traveled to Heerenveen and took the child to Mrs. Troostwijk’s home in Leeuwarden. After a while, Moritz was relocated to the home of the Banga family in Bergum, Friesland. Foppe Banga, the owner of the Trio printing press, and his wife, Dirkje, had a son who was one year older than Moritz. After a while, a daughter was born to them. Foppe and Dirkje spread a rumor that Moritz was the child of a cousin from Gelderland. They cared for him as if he were a member of their family without ever accepting any financial remuneration. Even though two German soldiers were billeted in their home during the last year of the war, Moritz stayed with them until the liberation. On one occasion, Foppe actually visited Bram and Johanna at their hiding place with the van der Spoels in order to give them news about their child.
On November 24, 1983, Yad Vashem recognized Foppe Banga and his wife, Dirkje Banga-Faber, as Righteous Among the Nations.
