Frederick Baller, the father of one of Elisabeth Oudkerk’s former classmates, was a very pious man who felt duty-bound to assist persecuted people. He was a member of the Amstelveen Resistance and provided many Jews with false identity and ration cards. Frederick had often told Elisabeth (later Goudsmit-Oudkerk) that he would help her and her family if they went into hiding. During the last major razzia in Amsterdam, on September 29, 1943, the crèche opposite the Hollandsche Schouwburg, where Elisabeth worked, was closed and she was forced onto a transport. After being arrested and standing in the railroad station, she was taken over to the mixed marriage group and from there Frederick took her to his home. After a few days he accompanied Elisabeth and her sister Helene to Bram and Annie van Zanten’s* farm in Nieuw-Vennep. Nine months later, when the local physician warned the van Zantens that their children had been talking in school, Frederick was alerted to the danger. He took Elisabeth to Jan Rot* (later Rote) and his wife in Aerdenhout, North Holland, where she remained until the end of the war, and escorted Helene to the Hultzers’* home in the same area. Throughout their time in hiding, Frederick’s sister from Haarlem acted as an intermediary between him and the hidden girls. Whenever there was a problem, Frederick was informed and he immediately traveled by bicycle from Amstelveen to Haarlem and took the sisters to a different hideout.
On January 29, 1974, Yad Vashem recognized Frederick Franz Carl Baller as Righteous Among the Nations.
