He was thus acutely aware of the increasing measures against the Jews during the occupation. When the deportations of the Jews started in the summer of 1942, he was more than willing to help where needed, initially by having his workshop used as a contact address for Jews, and soon became involved in providing false papers and finding hiding addresses. Among those helped by Willem Baas was the Nuszbaum couple who had jumped a tram under the nose of the Gestapo while on their way to an assembly point for deportation. Willem changed their identity papers and located a hiding address for them in the northern province of Friesland. He also went to their sealed apartment in Amsterdam to recover some important personal papers. During the three years that they were in hiding, Willem kept in touch, providing forged food stamps and giving them moral support. Also M. van Kleef, another Jew, was provided with a hiding address, false papers and then coupons on a monthly basis by Willem. In addition, Willem Baas hid the Coopman couple in his home until their presence so close to his workshop with people coming in frequently, became too dangerous. Willem moved them to a Ms. S. Keultjes in Amsterdam, while he continued to provide their monthly food stamps. On April 14, 1943, as a result of a denunciation, Willem Baas was arrested together with a fellow underground worker. He was incarcerated in the Vught (Herzogenbusch) concentration camp, where he became infected with tuberculosis. He did not recover from this illness even after his release on March 13, 1944, and died in 1951. On September 3, 2000, Yad Vashem recognized Willem Nico Hetto Baas as Righteous Among the Nations. |
