Rescue Story
Baalbergen, Willem
When the deportations of Jews were being carried out in full force, Mrs. van Geldere approached Willem Baalbergen of Noordwijk, South Holland, and asked him to find shelter for four Jewish children. Willem knew van Geldere and her husband, a doctor in an Amsterdam hospital, from the time they used to vacation in Noordwijk-on-the-sea. He found suitable homes for three of the children and took the fourth, 13-year-old Catharina Kroonenberg, into his own home, where she stayed from 1943 until a year after the war. It was especially risky for Willem to hide a Jewish refugee as he ran an upholstery shop that the Germans frequently visited to shop or make inquiries. Willem was part of an underground group of four called the Resistance Committee, that was active in Noordwijk. They took care of about 40 Jewish refugees in the area, getting them safe houses, ration coupons, and forged identity papers. He also helped the Catz family in their aborted attempt to escape to Switzerland.
On July 6, 1981, Yad Vashem recognized Willem Baalbergen as Righteous Among the Nations.
