Rescue Story
Aardema, Attje
During the war, Attje Aardema worked as a nurse in Nieuwlande, Drenthe, and provided free medical care to people in hiding. As such, she saved Jews from persecution. This information is based on the testimony of Arnold Douwes*, the initiator and indefatigable organizer of the project for hiding Jews in the area, and Nico (Max LĂ©ons), a young Jew from Voorburg, South Holland, who was his faithful assistant. Between 1943 and 1945, Douwes kept a diary in which he mentioned Attje among the people who helped Jews.
On June 9, 1983, Yad Vashem recognized Attje Aardema as Righteous Among the Nations
