She had a broken leg and desperately needed a safe hideout. Despite the grave danger they were putting their own lives in, the Alkemas welcomed Miesje into their home in Velp, Gelderland. The risk they took was all the greater because Harke was a reserve officer in the Dutch army and as such, he was threatened with forced labor in Germany. Moreover, Harke and Albertha had played an active role in the underground. Thus Miesje could only stay with them for a few months. In the summer of 1943, Harke was also forced to go into hiding after learning that the Germans were pursuing him. By September 1944 Harke had come out of hiding and again this selfless couple put themselves at risk by allowing Ruben van Kleef to stay in their home until the liberation in May 1945. On December 24, 1979, Yad Vashem recognized Harke Alkema and his wife, Albertha Clasina Maria Alkema-van Randen, as Righteous Among the Nations.
