Alderse Baas, Johannes H.
Jacob H. Coppenhagen had known the Reverend Johannes Alderse Baas since his school days and they had never lost contact with each other. When the persecution of the Jews in Holland intensified, Jacob turned to Johannes for help and Johannes, who was active in a student group in the underground, found a place for Jacob to hide with a young couple, the Hellemans*, in Amsterdam. However, since the Germans were seeking Johannes Helleman for forced labor and he therefore had to go into hiding, Jacob could not hide in his home for long. Consequently, Johannes Alderse Baas again became involved and found a new hideout for Jacob, but before long this place too was deemed unsafe. Jacob then sought shelter in a school where he had previously been a teacher and to which he still had the keys. While he hid there, Johannes, a student at the university at the time, sustained Jacob by providing him with food, clothing, and good advice. During the war, Johannes also managed to save the Coppenhagen family’s library, which contained valuable Hebrew books.
On November 28, 1978, Yad Vashem recognized Johannes H. Alderse Baas as Righteous Among the Nations.
