Aben, Gerardus Alphonsus & Maria Geertruida (Moermans)
In August 1943, when living openly in Amsterdam became too dangerous, the Westerweel* group assisted Abraham Sarig to obtain a short list of hiding places that
he and his family could use for the remainder of the war. Abraham, his wife, and their two daughters were housed separately at different addresses. In September 1944, Sarig, together with his wife, moved to a new hideout in the town of De Bilt, Utrecht. Life there was difficult. Some relatives of the woman of the house, Gerardus and Maria Aben, became acutely aware of the situation. The Abens perceptiveness and their generous spirits caused them to invite the Sarigs to take shelter in their home in the nearby town of Bilthoven. The situation was indeed unhealthy and after brief deliberation the Sarigs accepted their offer, moving into the Abens home on March 7, 1945. Together with their five children the Abens made the lives of their guests pleasant and comfortable. They refused to accept any kind of payment and were more than happy to share the little food they had with their guests. One of the gestures Abraham made for his host family in the way of repayment was to prepare one of the boys for his confirmation. Until the end of the war they were free to move around the town of Bilthoven unafraid and unnoticed.
On November 13, 1984, Yad Vashem recognized Gerardus Alphonsus Aben and his wife, Maria Geertruida Aben-Moermans, as Righteous Among the Nations.
