Piet Wildschut owned a brickyard in Terwolde, Gelderland, whose spacious grounds enabled him to hide many fugitives. Piet was a member of the Westerweel* group. He offered a hiding place to six Hehalutz members who had been trainees in Hachshara in the Terwolde area when the deportations began in 1942. During the coming wave of arrests, Piet’s apartment and grounds served as hiding places for many of the haverim, some of whom stayed for years while others later escaped to France and Spain. Piet’s wife, Thea, supported him throughout this period and also found a hiding place for the infant son of one of the couples, the Reinholds.
On June 16,1964, Yad Vashem recognized Piet Wildschut as Righteous Among the Nations.
