Rescue Story
Brusse, Henk & Sita (Cochius-Andersen),
In August 1942, when Joop Westerweel* began to assist the Halutzim in the Paviljoen Loosdrechtsche Rade Youth Aliyah home, he was helped by one of his closest friends, Henk Brusse. Henk was a member of the board of the school of which Joop was the principal. Henk, an architect by profession, lived with his wife, Sita, in Rotterdam, where he had excellent contacts for finding hiding places and also with the city registrar, from where important information could be removed or added to help save lives. He also knew policemen who dared help the Resistance. Henk was personally involved in bringing food coupons to Jews in hiding and he sheltered Jews in his own home if there was a real emergency. One of the people he hid was Uscha Levy. After Joop was arrested on March 11, 1944, Henk facilitated communications between Joop in captivity and the other members of his underground group by transferring letters. Together with Frans Gerritsen* and Jan Smit*, Henk donated blood to be smuggled into Vught to Joop to assist his escape by having him fake a stomach hemorrhage that would have gotten him transferred to a hospital from where he could be freed. The plan failed, however, and Henk was arrested on April 24, 1944. He was deported to Germany and died in the Gross Rosen concentration camp in 1944.
On March 15, 1990, Yad Vashem recognized Henk Brusse and his wife, Sita Brusse-Cochius (Andersen), as Righteous Among the Nations.
