Mrs. Hes moved in with them in the beginning of 1943 for some time together with one of her daughters. When she had to leave, they located another hiding address and kept an eye on her wellbeing all through the war. Willem and Johanna helped another of the daughters, Fiet (later Tsipora Bar Asher), and her husband, Joseph Andriesse (later Bar Asher), in 1944 when they planned to flee across the border into Belgium and reach neutral Spain through France. Willem and Johanna were connected to the group of Jewish pioneers who were part of the Westerweel* group that organized such escape routes. Fiet managed to reach Spain. Joseph was captured but survived. Willem and Johanna hid Jews in their home and found places for others with their friends. They also helped people spiritually and materially, motivated by their religious beliefs and their need to resist the oppressive forces of occupation, regardless of the danger. They kept in close contact with those whom they rescued, including Mrs. Hes, who remained in the Netherlands, and the Bar Ashers in Israel, whom they visited 20 years after the war. On April 26, 1966, Yad Vashem recognized Willem Jan van der Linden and his wife, Johanna Wilhelmina van der Linden-Buskes, as Righteous Among the Nations. |
