Rescue Story
Bekker, Arie & Japy (van Herk)
Nine-year-old Maurits Isedoor Berendsen and his mother had been hiding in the town of Doetinchem, Gelderland, but as the war progressed they had to leave and were forced to separate. MauritsÂ’ mother went to live with the van der Hoek* family and Maurits went to the Hoogvliet* family in Rockanje, Gelderland. He stayed there for 11 months but had to leave again. This time he was taken to Arie and Jaapje Bekker, who were vegetable growers. The Bekkers took excellent care of Maurits and even arranged false papers for him and had him enrolled at the local school. After the war, Arie and Jaapje returned Maurits to his father. His mother had died of cancer in June 1944.
On June 29, 1995, Yad Vashem recognized Arie Bekker and his wife, Japy Bekker-van Herk, as Righteous Among the Nations.
