During the time that this photograph was taken, Tinga was helping to solve a narcissus-bulb shortage in the U.S., a result of a federal embargo on importations of the plant. Eelco Idzard Tinga (1882-1973) was born in Holland. He studied the nursery business in school and immigrated to the United States in February 1906. In 1908, he purchased two ten acre tracts of land and a house in Castle Hayne, NC with his childhood friend Hugo van Nes. The two men started a nursery called Holland Nurseries Company. They grew flowers, root crops and lettuce. In 1912, Tinga bought 30 acres of land in Wrightsboro so that he could be closer to Wilmington, where the crops were sold. With this land he started Tinga Nursery and Truck Farm in 1913. The nursery is still in business today and is run by his descendants.
